Fake Colors

I read this article yesterday and it really stuck with me because it aligned with my feelings of how incredible the brain is. There is so much that we see day to day that we do not question. The color magenta is one of those things.

Magenta is considered a fake color because it is actually impossible to make in our light spectrum. Similarly, our eyes do not have the ability to actually see the color yellow because the cones in our eyes are only made for green, blue, and red. Everything in between, our brains make up.

It’s hard to fathom how impressive this is. Every second, our brains are processing data so fast that we don’t even recognize a single beat is out of place, our brain is trying too hard to make sure we experience things how we expect it to be experienced. I think for many people pushing outside these boundaries causes a lot of discomfort, and it makes sense. Our brains are wired to be this way. We seek this comfort of knowing what to expect because survival was and still is the most important thing that drives our species.

But what happens if we start to look a little further? What happens if we try to see past what our brains want us to see. What is out there? What causes our brains to have this limit? Is it how we are taught based on society to live? Are our brains somehow psychically linked together where we all share the same boundaries for how this world operates?

Okay, I know, this is all beginning to sound like a conspiracy. I don’t know what the answer is, and I don’t think I ever will. However, I think there are valid questions that are presented when we recognize that our brain is making things up to satisfy our own internal comfort. This personally drives me to make my brain slightly less comfortable so I can understand better why it does this. I hope that the pursuit of that knowledge gives me a better understanding of the bigger picture.
