The next book that I read during this time was The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss. A fantasy book may seem like a strange stop on my journey, however, at the time Caitlyn and myself were trying to read a book together at the same time. While my thoughts on fiction were not well developed at this time, I remember looking at the way magic was presented in this world with a curious lens. The magic was very ‘scientific’, it was a very ‘give and take’ type of magic. Not unlike what is also presented in the trending Witcher series.
I mentioned already that I believe Consciousness = Creativity in another post, so that leads to this belief I have that there may not be such a thing as true fiction (aka, fully made up by my definition). I believe that through creativity we are sharing a direct connection to our pure consciousness. If that belief can be held, it is not so far off to recognize that through writing, inspiration from the other side makes its way into the media we enjoy to consume. Similar to a religion, I think people are drawn to certain works because they speak to us on a subconscious level. There is something familiar to us, something that reminds us of our true selves. While walking the path of my journey and reading so many different books, it was just as fascinating to me that many of my fictional reading choices even complimented the non-fiction books I read. Take Star Wars as an example. The Force as a concept is not so different from a real-life Religion. Even today it touches the hearts and minds of countless people.
I’d say the fictional series that impacted my spiritual life the most is Avatar the Last Airbender. I could, and likely will, have more posts to go in-depth how much I have learned from this children’s show, but this show specifically is what drives my belief that creativity can show far more than just fiction. I think it is clear that skeptics would once again point out that these authors or writers drew their inspiration from tangible sources, but it doesn’t matter. These visionaries took content from sources and processed it and put it on ‘paper’ in a way that made the most sense to them. Everyone is different, and this method of explaining these concepts in an entertaining way has the ability to bring new thoughts and ideas to other people. From there these ideas grow again, and through the creativity and originality of each person, we get a better glimpse of what the other side is.
I look at fiction so differently these days. There is always something to learn from whatever book you read or movie you watch. It’s a mindset to open yourself to be taught by these other sources. The key is to not close yourself off to any teacher, no matter who or what it is. If you do, you say to yourself that you are not fully willing to learn and that will inevitably hold you back. However, if you stay open and learn from all sources, you will be tapping into your own creative nature. Since we are the creators of our own reality, you’ll have more power to shape your own narrative.
