Great Mythologies of the World – Great Courses

A small detour in development books. For as long as I can remember I have loved mythology. There was a Great Courses that covered all of the world’s mythology, so it was a very quick purchase for me. I was excited because I consider myself well versed in Greek/Roman/Egyptian/ and Norse mythology. This course gave me a broader scope of myths from all over the world.

I admit, that I do not remember many of these stories off the top of my head, and I am pretty certain that I did not finish the course. However, looking back with my perspective now, I am interested to analyze my connection with mythology.

I know that there is meaning behind what we are drawn to. Something about mythology calls to me similar to how the rest of these books do. I think its because I recognize that there is importance to the beliefs that these cultures of the past had. Today, we rely so much on what other people tell us is true that we do not consider our own intuition and experiences as much as we should. Now, I am sure that many of these ancient civilizations were taught what they believed too. However, I feel like without so called ‘facts’ thrown at these ancient peoples, they believed more in what they felt was right rather than what they were told was right.

I think that they used their intuition more than we do today. Maybe a harsh transition into the present, I also want to write about phrases that we say today. Have we considered where things we say come from? What is the origin? Is there an origin? ‘I saw my life flash before my eyes’, ‘I see the light at the end of the tunnel’, ‘be the light of the world’. Have we ever questioned why we say these things? The books that have been on my journey speak to why these came around. People that had near death or transcendental experiences would have said these things. Something about it rang true for others to adopt as common sayings that we now have today. Could these sayings come from stories that happened in the past? Did these stories become myths? Questions that will never be answered.

There is much to learn from mythology. While I am not exactly sure why it calls to me, I know it was and still is important for my growth and understanding of what the other side is.
