This book was the first in my journey, and I do not think any other book would have put me to where I am today. Since I listened to this as an audiobook, almost every sentence had a powerful message that connected deeply to my soul. I have always found the human brain so fascinating. I think the most interesting part is it is a pile of mush that operates like a computer. Science cannot truly explain it. ‘It is just a bunch of neurons firing off signals’. Okay sure, but how do neurons capture thoughts? How about memories? At the end of the day, there is no logical or rational reasoning for why we have brains. We just do. It is so mysterious and magical.
Throughout life, whenever I would tell myself that science is always right and there is nothing beyond what science can prove, I would always tell myself that until the brain was 100% mapped and understood, there was always a possibility out there of something more. The brain is too complex and complicated to just become created through evolution. At least this is how my mind always kept the door open to further possibilities.
So what about the actual book? Unfortunately, I did not write down many thoughts while I was reading the book. However, the book introduced me to quantum entanglement, mirror neurons, and many other fascinating phenomena that occur in our world that is so miraculous. Honestly, we often take so much for granted in this world, but when you really look at things under a microscope, life is very interesting. The whole book pointed to the idea that there is an undoubted smart design to the universe.
I think the story that I remember vividly was when Dr. Lombard went to the planetarium with his daughters. He said he was looking up at a model of what the known universe was and he was shocked to find that when you zoom out far enough and see how the planetary and solar systems connect to one another, it works very similarly to how the synapses of the brain connect to one another. He said it was a moment where he realized that the macrosphere and microsphere were really one and the same. I believe this moment for him was when he recognized that it was too perfect to be a coincidence.
This book was a perfect introduction for me. I needed someone with a scientific background to give a grounded and rational look at just the possibility that something more could exist. Once I had this, I was able to take that possibility and hold it up to other ideas that followed the same logical and rational approaches.
I cannot explain how important it was for me to read this book first. It was completely by accident, but I truly do not know if my journey would have been as successful without it. Looking back on the book with what I know now, it’s probably not the best book that I have read, but it is an important introduction. I recommend this book for anyone that wants to take a step into spirituality without diving as deep into the ‘paranormal’.
